“I am writing from the floor, Sarah Morris having knocked me flat with a punch I never saw coming.”
Today’s Sentence of the Day comes from Los Angeles Times sports writer Bill Plaschke.
I was first introduced to Plaschke through his hot takes on ESPN. I wasn’t a fan.
Then, in college, a professor told me I wrote a story like Plaschke. I wasn’t amused. The professor promised me that it was a compliment and sent me a copy of this story.
I can assure you, I have never come close to writing anything as good as the story this sentence comes from. Do yourself a favor and read the full story. It’s the best sports profile I’ve ever read, partially because Plaschke had the vision to do a story on a fan.***
Every day, The Southpaw finds a sentence that makes him think or laugh. It can come from a song, a poem, a book, a newspaper article. It’s a daily celebration of our odd – and yet beautiful – language.
