I just finished reading Lawrence Wright’s brilliant and devastating “Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief.”
Wright is one of the best journalists out there, having won a Pulitzer prize for his reporting on Al Qaida.* He recently tackled Scientology with “Going Clear.” It’s a brutally thorough look at the problems with L. Ron Hubbard’s followers. He doesn’t bring you crack pots and cranks. The book includes believable allegations of forced abortions, forced divorces, physical abuse, child labor, slavery and more.Yes, there is more after that.
Anyway, our sentence of the day comes from a note during a chapter that partially focuses on Tom Cruise.
“Cruise’s attorney says that no Scientology executives set him up with girlfriendsa nd that no female Scientologists that Cruise dated moved into his home.”
If you want to know what this is all about, pick up the book. It’s as terrifying and gripping as anything Stephen King ever wrote.
* “The Looming Tower” – If you want to make any educated statements about terrorism, the United States’ struggles fighting terrorism, or Al Qaida, you had better have read the book.
Every weekday, The Southpaw finds a sentence that grips him. It could be through its language or the ideas it carries that he finds interesting. It could be a piece of dialogue from a movie, an excerpt from a book or a lyric from a song.
