John Tyler was born before the Bill of Rights was passed. Yet two of his grandkids are still alive.
If ever you wanted a reminder of how far we’ve come so quickly, there are people on this earth whose grandfather was president while slavery was still legal and fought for its expansion.
Let’s break down the numbers.
John Tyler was born March 29, 1790.
He was president from 1841 to 1845, so 15 years before the Civil War. He was a busy man who had 15 kids. He died in 1862, before the Battle of Gettysburg.
His son, future president of William and Mary Lyon Gardiner Tyler, was born in 1852.
Lyon’s sons Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr. And Harrison Ruffin Tyler were born in 1924 and 1928.
This is mind-boggling.
h/t to Zak Young for sending the Newsweek article that pointed out our connection to The Revolutionary era.
