In which I firmly grab onto the third rail of American politics

This is what makes me madder than anything about the state of the modern Republican Party.

The group gets a ton of votes from people who want to protect the unborn. But a vast majority of the GOP’s heartless policies are decidedly cruel to the unborn.

Oh, sure, they’ll tout their 20-week abortion bans, but that’s not going to make a dent in the market for abortions like the other decisions they make that increase the desire for them.

Let’s take a look at the tax plan put forth. It adoption tax credit disappears with this new bill.

You know what drives down the market for abortions? The access and ease with which a woman or couple with an unwanted pregnancy can give io their child to adoption. This tax bill will no doubt influence the number of people seeking adoptions.

At this point, I shouldn’t be outraged. But it’s so damn brazen.

It’s just like opposition to universal health care and paid maternity leave. While I think those policies have moral merit on their own, they’re proven to drive down the market for abortion.

Consider this: Before Obamacare came into law, the US had the highest abortion rate among developed countries. Higher than Great Britain, which has universal health care and paid maternity leave. Higher than France which has universal health care and paid maternity leave. Higher than Spain which has … you guessed it.

So if you’re belief that abortion is so wrong the issue trumps all others, then you should be supporting the policies that truly have an impact on driving down the number of unwanted pregnancies.
