Sandy Koufax tossed a ridiculous 11 shutouts in 1963.
That is the most by any left-handed pitcher since 1900. In fact only four other southpaws have tossed nine shutouts in a single season. The most recent pitcher to reach the mark was John Tudor in 1985. The other most recent pitcher was Louisiana Lightning himself, Ron Guidry.
The two remaining pitchers to accomplish the feat are Hall of Famers. One is Carl Hubbell, who once struck out five consecutive Hall of Famers. Can you name the other?
I’ll give you three clues.
First, he was a two-time 20-Game winner and ERA champ.
Second, he once held the record for consecutive shutout innings in the World Series.
Third, he hit more home runs than he gave up.
That’s right, it’s George Herman Ruth.
